This year I had the privilege of planting sunflower seeds with one of the grandchildren. The sheer excitement on their face as the seed became a stem and then a big sunflower burst forth was a joy to see.
We have learned many things from this process and the life lessons are huge! Plants teach us profound life lessons about resilience, patience, and how our surrounding environment shapes our potential – who would have thought that!
We learned that identical seeds from the same packet, placed in the same environment grow differently, which reminded us that as humans our potential and life experiences are tied to our support networks however we all grow and develop at different paces.
Sunflowers grow tall and need strong root systems to hold them upright – so do we as we build our characters and develop our futures. This teaches us to stand with confidence in who we are while remaining humble.
We learned that patience pays off – seeds do not transform into flowers overnight which was a massive lesson however just like seeds we learn that personal growth requires time and consistency. As seeds are watered, it is important for us to be well nourished too. In a world of instant gratification, waiting weeks for a seed to sprout teaches kids one of life’s hardest, most valuable lessons: good things take time.
We have learned to accept failure too as some plants didn’t survive and others didn’t grow to their full potential and flower. This is a hard lesson to learn but helps us to focus on how to thrive in our own space.
We learned that young sunflowers track the sun across the sky from east to west (a process called heliotropism). In life, this reminds us to focus on positivity, seek out personal growth, and turn toward what nurtures our whole being. Watching the magic of a tiny seed turning into a vibrant, flower is such a special moment to share together.
Sunflowers rarely grow completely alone; they flourish best when planted together in fields and clusters. We also achieve more and support one another when we lean on our community.
Sunflowers endure heavy rain, strong winds, and scorching heat without losing their purpose. They remind us to stay resilient and patient through life's hard seasons. Tending a seed until it hopefully blooms higher than her head builds genuine self-confidence and a strong sense of responsibility, in both flowers and children. There is nothing quite like watching something you planted from seed come to life.
The face of a sunflower is actually made up of many tiny individual flowers! These are known as disk florets. These tiny flowers are only noticeable as individual flowers when you look closely at the center disk of a sunflower. They all work together to make something bigger, something beautiful, something magnificent. They all work together to build up the sunflower. That lesson also helps us to realise that we can be part of a team within our community and encourage each other.
Finding the wonder of nature in the ordinary run of a day is a mindset—a quiet shift from simply looking at the world to truly seeing it. Once you train your eye to notice the details, the mundane routine transforms into an endless gallery. Take 5 minutes out of your day to stand still and look around you as life scurries by.
The lesson are endless and the sunflowers have so many lessons to teach us. Maybe you can think of more? Take a look around in nature and see what it can teach you.
