God's character- What He wants us to Know

The Bible is full of hope which is a blessing for us when the world around us is in such turmoil. The bible is God's word written for us and verses about his character are themselves a source of comfort. Let's take a look at 10 characteristics of God.

Deuteronomy chapter 32 verse 10 - 

“He found him in a desert land, and in the howling waste of the wilderness; he encircled him, he cared for him, he kept him as the apple of his eye.”  

Just as God led Moses and the people through the wilderness and the hope he offered them, may we remember all the wonderful things that God has done for us and his never-failing faithfulness to His children. May we remember to keep in mind the many pitfalls we will face in our Christian life and maintain our faith in His promises to sustain and keep us. 

2 Peter chapter 2 verse 9 - 

“Then the Lord knows how to deliver the godly out of temptations and to reserve the unjust under punishment for the day of judgment.”  

Peter assured his readers and us that God knows how to “be delivering the godly out of testing and temptation” so that we may live victoriously under whatever conditions we encounter. This is true for us today.

Isaiah chapter 30 verse 18: 

“Yet the LORD longs to be gracious to you; therefore, he will rise up to show you compassion. For the LORD is a God of justice. Blessed are all who wait for him!”  

God is just; He is perfectly upright and fair in how he treats His creation. God created the world so that in the end He might reveal Himself to mankind, and that men should accept Him as their Creator, and give Him glory.

Romans chapter 11 verse 33:

 “Oh, the depth of the riches both of the wisdom and knowledge of God! How unsearchable are His judgments and unfathomable His ways!” 

God is wise. No plan we could make for our lives could be better than the plan he has already crafted and is carrying out for us. We might not understand his ways today, but we can trust that because God is infinitely wise, he truly is working all things out in the best possible way.

 Isaiah chapter 46 verses 9 and 10 - 

“Remember the former things, those of long ago; I am God, and there is no other; I am God, and there is none like me. I make known the end from the beginning, from ancient times, what is still to come. I say: My purpose will stand, and I will do all that I please”  

God is omniscient, which means he knows everything. He's aware every moment of every day, exactly what we're up against. He knows our way, and is with us always

Malachi chapter 3 verse 6 -

" I the Lord do not change. So, you, the descendants of Jacob, are not destroyed.” 

God does not change. Who he is never changes. His attributes are the same from before the beginning of time into eternity. His character never changes – he never gets “better” or “worse.” His plans do not change. His promises do not change

Psalm chapter 86 verse 10 - 

“But thou, O Lord, art a God full of compassion, and gracious, longsuffering, and plenteous in mercy”. 

God is compassionate. In his nature, and the perfections of it; in his power, wisdom, truth, faithfulness, love, grace, and mercy; and in all his attributes; the Father is great,

2 Timothy chapter 2 verse 13 -

“if we are faithless, he remains faithful, for he cannot deny himself.”  

When we read that God remains faithful, for he cannot deny himself, we see these his attributes working together. The fact that he is unchanging means he can never not be faithful. The fact that God is infinitely, unchangingly faithful means that he never forgets anything, never fails to do anything he has set out to do, never changes his mind or takes back a promise.  

Psalm chapter 34 verse 8 -

 “O, taste and see that the Lord is good” – Gods mercy flows from his goodness. we discover wonderful ways that the Lord delivers His servants from their afflictions and saves them from the hands of their enemies.

1 John chapter 1 verse 9 -

"If we make it our habit to confess our sins, in his faithful righteousness he forgives us for those sins and cleanses us from all unrighteousness."

John was talking to the people of his day yet this is still true of us today - when you have sinned, humble yourself, confess your sin and seek God's forgiveness.

What these quotes show is that God does care for us. You may feel alone right now or without hope. That is only natural when we are continually pounded by bad news on social media, the press and from friends. Just remember though you are not alone and there is indeed hope. God is here for you and for me. His characteristics show us how he loves us, cares for us and wants us to follow him and read his word. 

We need to remember that when we stumble and fall, it is immensely encouraging to know that God will never abandon us and at the heart of God’s character is his desire to be a Father to all who draw near to Him. The more deeply we dig into the Scriptures, the more we will uncover new and beautiful facets to the character of God. And the longer we spend time with Him and in His Word, the better we will know and understand him.
